Effective Networking to Land a Job

In the good old days, folks wanting to land or change jobs would attend in person networking events and exchange business cards. Today, effective networking is done on LinkedIn - or should be. The best way to build a network that can help you land a job, launch a new career or a business, is to be proactive.

Tip: Find people you worked with, and for, on LinkedIn and endorse them for certain skills and submit a sincere recommendation.

When endorsing them, don’t check every skill. Focus on 3-4 skills you truly feel they possess. For endorsements, keep it short and again be genuine. It won’t help to say they walk on water and will outwork anyone. Point out two solid skills and two personal attributes. Here’s an example:

Having worked with Maria in the same group for 5 years I can attest to her ability to effectively manage projects and bring them to a close on time and under budget. She also displayed great cross-functional team leadership and high level critical thinking skills. I highly recommend her.”

Another good way to build your LinkedIn network and goodwill is to Like and Repost what your network members are posting. It doesn't take long and it shows support for them which increases the odds they will reciprocate, plus it exposes your name and brand to others.
